Third annual report: Night Owls. Qualitative research on the relationship between drug use and sexual abuse in the nightlife

Noctambul@s Observatory aims to go deep into the existing relationship between drug use, harassment and sexual abuse in nightlife settings. The study is part of a line of prevention and risk reduction based on a universal and selective intervention approach. In prevention and risk reduction contexts, sexual violence has not been named, even if it is, ‒paradoxically, and on the basis of the results found‒ one of the main risks in nightlife settings, especially for women. Our society’s high tolerance towards sexual abusive behaviour, especially under the influence of drugs, has helped to hide the phenomenon. That is why, in 2013, the Health and Community Foundation, funded by the National Plan on Drugs, started out this observatory with the aim of developing a stable line of specific work based on the analysis and preventive intervention aimed at changing the viewpoint upon young people and upon professionals involved in these contexts (both the entertainment industry and the prevention/risk reduction).

The present report is the result of the work carried out by the Noctambul@s Observatory in the past academic year 2015-2016. From the beginning of the project, the Observatory has published several annual reports about the results found and the present work will be the third annual written report.
